PC sales tumble as Tablets and Smart Phones Grow

– Is your website Mobile Responsive?

Global sales of PCs fell 14% in the first three months this year, the biggest fall since research firm IDC started tracking the industry in 1994. 76.3 million units were shipped, a figure that underlines the appeal of tablets and smartphones as alternatives to PCs.

Windows 8 is designed to work well with touch-sensitive screens, but the displays add to the cost of a PC. Together, the changes and higher prices “have made PCs a less attractive alternative to dedicated tablets and other competitive devices,” Mr O’Donnell said.

“This is horrific news for PCs,” said BGC financial analyst Colin Gillis. “It’s all about mobile computing now.”

This is yet another sign that people are more than happy to use their smart phones and tablets for every day Internet surfing and will expect websites to appear correctly on their device no matter what size. The key to making your website smart phone friendly is to make it thumb friendly. Can the user do everything they want to do using one thumb? e.g. Making sure they don’t have to zoom in and out, find it hard to click on tabs, large images/banners taking up all the screen space, flash files leaving blank spaces etc etc
