Tablet devices prompt Christmas shopping ahead of Black Friday

Over a third of UK retailers should be expecting a surge in sales growth made one mobile and tablet devices.

This sales rise is a result of the festive period leading to an optimistic view ahead of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

A recent survey conducted found that 35% of retailers expect tablets to be the fastest growing sales device, beating the smartphone and stores who both came in at 19%.

Social media buying, which is still in its early stages, is one of the other areas that is having a close eye kept on it, as  retailers believe it could increase by 21% compared with the previous year.

Head of Retail & Wholesale at Barclays, Richard Lowe, said: “2014 has been a good year for many retailers thanks to heightened consumer confidence and this is clearly reflected in their brighter outlook for the Christmas season. It’s interesting to see that purchases on tablets have been cited as retailers’ biggest opportunity for growth and social commerce is also one to watch in the future, as ‘buy buttons’ on social networking sites will make online shopping even more accessible.”

 65% of the retailers’ that were surveyed have said they are planning on promoting a majority of their stock on Black Friday, which will be taking place on 28th of November in the UK, however some stores will begin on the 24th of this month.
69% of the retailers expect Black Friday and Cyber Monday to continue to create a surge in sales in the oncoming years.
96% of the surveyed retailers believed that the traffic on their individual websites will increase on Cyber Monday in comparison to the previous year.

Lowe continued, “The UK hasn’t seen Black Friday and Mega Monday fall on the same weekend since 2008, so retailers will be pulling out all the stops to make it a great shopping experience with some dazzling offers. However, some consumers will opt to leave their Christmas shopping later than this, thanks to improved delivery and Click and Collect options.

UK retailers claim to be prepared for the amount of traffic they will no doubt be receiving on Christmas Day. 9% expect hits to increase and the busiest period is predicted to happen between the late hours of 20:00 and 22:00.
